Father’s Day

Happy Belated Father’s Day to all the dads out there.

From our biological fathers, to step-dads, to wanna-be dads and the very many categories of dads I may not be able to mention here. To also our spiritual fathers. Speaking of which, I believe one can be a spiritual father without necessarily being male, because it is about the function of fatherhood and not gender. The same way that you can be a son in the kingdom despite your gender? But, today is not the day I have chosen to throw stones in these streets.

The interesting thing I find about Father’s Day, it is the time we realize the sacrifices that fathers make, and how little it is appreciated.

The other glaring thing about Father’s Day is the fact that we get to celebrate very many fathers, father-to-be and fathers in waiting, but there is the one Father that we hardly remember to celebrate. Our heavenly Father. Jehovah Himself. Even Jesus Christ gets an entire Christmas season to be celebrated (although many a times we actually do not celebrate Christ during the festive season, but as I said, today is not a stone throwing day) but Father’s Day is more geared towards earthly fathers.

So today although I am late for this;

Happy Father’s Day to my heavenly Father.

The Enormous and Kind Being who brings us sun shine every single day.

Matthew 5:45 NKJV

“that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun shine on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.”

The one who first loved us and sent us help when we could not help ourselves and we didn’t even know we needed help

1 John 4:10

In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

The one who knows our needs more than we do, and cares about every detail of our lives.

Mathew 10:29-30

“Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.”

To the one who gives good and perfect gifts. Nothing missing. Nothing broken.

Matthew 7:11

If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

James 1:17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

There is so much more I could list but for now allow me to finish here.

And my question to you is, have you had the chance to celebrate our Heavenly Father and wish Him a Happy Father’s Day? Have you sat down to list all the good things He has done for you? How He fought your battles and gave you the strength to wake up to each new day? How He carried you through things you had no way of going through on your own? How he settled you into the space that you can now call your own? How he gave you one more breath of air when you were sick and didn’t think that you would get to enjoy the air you are breathing now?

God like many of the good fathers we have seen, has a way of quietly carrying us through like the foundation of a building carries storied buildings; largely invisible and quite strong.

And to those who have only heard rumors and myths of good fathers, I pray that you will find a good father in God. That beyond the prayers we make before our meals or taking a long trip, that we will find a relationship with our heavenly Father through Jesus Christ.

That you will experience first hand what it is like to have a Father. If you trust Him and are open to Him, You will find Him to be a good father.

PS: I wanted to change the Father’s Day photo but then again, what is Fatherhood if it is not receiving very cringey gifts from your kids
